Choctaw is the language of the Native American Choctaw people of the southeastern United States (mostly in southeastern Oklahoma and east central Mississippi, and into Louisiana and Tennessee), and is a member of the Muskogean family, closely related to Chickasaw. The Choctaw language was used as a universal language by the frontiersmen of the early 19th century, There are estimated to be nearly 18,000 speakers of Choctaw.
