Since its beginnings in 1998, The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies (TBC), originally The Beijing Center for Language & Culture, has educated the academic community about China. TBC has programs for undergraduate students, faculty members, and administrators, plus tailor-made programs for special academic groups. The initial focus of TBC was on undergraduate study-abroad in China. In the process of developing its program, the Hutong School's educational department has worked closely with students who study Chinese as a foreign language. We are quite familiar with the many bumps in the road one comes across whilst studying Mandarin Chinese. The Beijing Intensive Chinese Language Program provides Chinese language study at all levels in China's grand and bustling capital. This nine-week program provides a comprehensive introduction to China through study of its spoken and written language. The core curriculum centers on approximately 20 hours a week of language instruction, emphasizing grammar, oral comprehension, and speaking. Classes take place on the campus of the Beijing Institute of Education by trained instructors. The curriculum is augmented by a rich mixture of extracurricular activities and field trips, including a midterm trip to Qingdao, Pingyao, or another nearby city. Students also participate in a post-program tour. Tours in recent years have included Datong, Xian, and a Yangtze river trip. Students live in a dormitory on the campus of the Beijing Institute of Education where they have the option to live with a Chinese roommate. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn eight Boston University credits.

The six-week Intensive Chinese Language Study course at Peking University focuses exclusively on Chinese language training. In Beijing, Sprachcaffe not only offers Standard and Intensive Language Courses, but also Chinese Painting Courses (includes all materials) as well as Tai Chi Courses. These courses, taught by experienced teachers, can be combined with one of the Language Courses. Our school in Beijing is noted for qualified, professional teachers – all are native speakers of Mandarin Chinese; lessons in mini-groups of only 4-8 students per class; communicative learning methods and an easy beginner’s level to get started; and learning programs tailor-made according to length of stay with interchangeable and constantly updated learning materials.
